Confession time: I’ve never read a Tim Keller book. Ever! But when I saw the news about his recent death, it reminded me of how many women have told me how deeply his books impacted their faith life.

Being Catholic is kind of weird because some of your fellow Christians are like, “aren’t we all basically the exact same?” Uh, no. And then some other ones are like, “are you guys even Christians?” Uh, yes. And then some are like, “how do you find time to pray between all of the Mary-worshipping and abortion protesting?” and by that point you’re just anxiously looking for the nearest door.

It’s such an honor to me that we have so many protestant readers of the Catholic Feminist because there are protestants who have greatly transformed my faith. Do I believe the Catholic Church is the fullness of the faith? I do. But that doesn’t mean I can’t gain great spiritual truth from non-Catholic writers. I firmly believe that we’re all on a faith journey towards our heavenly home, and wherever you are on your meandering path right now, I’m so glad you’re here.

I have friends who don’t understand why we’d ever read a book by a non-Catholic—after all, Catholics have so many! And what if the ~heathens~ (I kid) lead us astray with an entire chapter on why the Eucharist is bullshit or something? But if you skip that section of the library, friends, you’re going to miss out on a heck of a lot of spiritual goodness. I do think you need to pay attention to what you’re reading, and just because someones’s a “spiritual teacher” doesn’t mean their book is worthwhile. But I know plenty of Catholic heresy spreaders, too, so do with that what you will.

As a reminder, I’m not going to use affiliate links on these bookish posts because I think the best way to support the literary world is to purchase from your own local, independent bookstore. ThriftBooks or the library are other great options! If you prefer audiobooks, Libro.fm connects with your local indie and has great prices.

Here are 10 Spiritual Books by Non-Catholics Every Catholic Feminist Should Read, According to Exactly One Catholic Feminist (ie., me).
