Just to address the tail end of your article - I'm so glad you are here and saying what you say! I am not a very articulate writer, and so much of what you share is like reading an organized and better-informed version of my own jumbled thoughts. I am a Catholic feminist, and your writing is deeply important and influential to me. THANK YOU!!!
I have to second Madeline’s words. Also, I’ve been mulling over your thought that “someone else made a different choice than you did, and they’re happy with it, and that ticks you off a bit.” I think this is a real sinful tendency of mine as I’ve always been competitive. I often feel angry or threatened when someone else chooses differently. It’s a good challenge for me every time I’m tempted to feel envy or jealousy.
This has been bananas. So many people were reading things in her essay that just weren’t there in the text. Also, I think there is a need for these kind of positive articles about motherhood and the sacrifices it entails. I really worried about becoming a parent because all I’d ever heard were bad things about it.
I'm reading this over 2 years later (just subscribed and I'm going through the archives cuz I love all your stuff) and I'm so glad you haven't closed up shop and focused on fiction! I am joining the Church soon and I also think feminism is still important. I'm so happy to find others who sit in this space of orthodox Christian values and empowering women. Very grateful for your voice, it encourages me to keep finding mine instead of just giving in to the people who insist there is no redeeming feminism.
Thank you for writing this! What an amazing world it would be if people didn't attack everyone else for their experiences. Thank you for thought-provoking work.
